Big Sister sketch

Still enjoying the heck out of that Art of the West magazine I bought. This sketch is based on a painting called Baby Sitter by Susan Lyon.

I LOVE this artist! Check out this one called School Children in Lima.

And isn't this one of the most gorgeous portraits you've ever seen?

Kim this is a really great sketch.

How are you doing with getting those paintings done? How many do you have so far?

Oh ya and I thought this was funny, I was on blog explosion and someone rated my blog and said that I have the worst blog they have EVER seen. Craziness!

I'm trying not be pissed off because you don't really know any better.

There is nothing inappropriate with using photo references rather than trying to get someone to stand still for six hours so you can paint 'em.

And you really can't compare my paintings, which are my interpretations of what I see, combined with more than a decade of cat watching, to the reproduction of the old sci-fi magazine cover that I did for you. That was not my art, it was just a copy of a piece of art I thought you would enjoy.

My cat paintings are my art. If they aren't serious enough, or fantastic enough, or "real" enough that's just too bad.

I'm not saying that I don't have room to grow...you are totally right in saying that i need to push myself. But the way that I do that is by studying better artists and trying to replicate what I love about their work.

This is the way I taught myself to paint, it is the way that I've honed my skills over the last year, and it is the way that i will continue to learn.

So, in summary, no apoligies for my sketches, no apologies for my cats, and I'll use a live model when I feel like using a live model, not when it suits other people's ideas of an "artistic" sorta thing to do.

(Sorry if I'm being b****y, I really am open to criticism, but I feel like what you wrote here is patronizing and unfair.)

Kim, I couldn't agree more with you. I love your cats they are YOU! If you started painting live objects only for the satisfaction of other well meaning people it wouldn't be YOU and the love wouldn't be in them like it is in your cat paintings and your other sketches and drawings which is what makes them SO darn GOOD. Art is an expression of you and how you see things not anyone else.

Keep up the great awesome work. You are my favorite artist and you are one talented little lady!

I sent you an e-mail.
