Shuffle doesn't seem to be as random a feature as one would think. At least it likes most of the same songs I do.
LOL.
Interesting selection this week. I wish I had an IPOD. But at least I have a laptop now.
Now....tell me what the draw of evangelical Christians in to Coldplay. Some people try and put them on the level of U2 or something.
I read an article on the lack of true random-ness of most digital music players. It seems that my Windows Media Player, which I play almost exclusively on random, has songs on it that I haven't heard in years...
As for the Coldplay, I know what you mean. I think the last four or five songs on the disc are especially good. I got stuck on "Swallowed in the Sea" for a couple weeks after first getting the album.
I love Natalie Merchant and Ben Harper!
I am not a fan of Cold Play, no siry bob! I do think he has the cutest little baby though! I see pictures of her in US magazine all the time and she is adorable!
Some people try and put them on the level of U2 or something.
I know I do. Coldplay is just as boring as U2.
It might be more of a Bourgeois thing than an evangelical thing...they're not as good as U2 but they do remind me of some of the eighties bands like Big Country and Tears for Fears that I miss.
here's exactly why I find myself defending Coldplay all the time. It's not that I think they're all that great, but more that I think they're okay, and most of the people I find who seem to detest Coldplay tend to know very little about their body of work. The same can be said about many folks I've found who express a strong distaste for U2.
It's okay to not be into a band you know little about, but it's kind of hypocritical to bash them without knowing much about them. I don't know if that's the case with Scott (or anyone else here), but it is the case with a lot of people I've talked to on this subject.
That is definitely not the case with Scott. And for me personally Howard I have been best friends with Kim almost my whole life. And for as long as I can remember she has loved U2, and I think that is awesome! So I have grown up hearing their music and all about the band because of Kim's deep love for this band. I will admit that a few songs were catchy but for the most part I didn't care much for their music. It's just not my taste (simple as that), and hey that's OK! And usually if I want to know more about a band or their body of work I need to like their music first. In fact for me most of the bands I do like I really don't take much personal interest in their personal lives. It's just about the music for me, most of the time, and after that sometimes I want to know about the artist behind the music and their work. So I guess if you have to know more about Coldplay and U2 and the history of their band to really appreciate them I think you really aren't saying much about their music in the first place.
I may have misunderstood what you are trying to say Howard and if I did, I apologize. I get a little defensive when anyone is, for lack of a better word, criticized just because they don't like U2's music. I know you won't like every band I love either.
Kim, because of some past stuff about this subject I just want you to know that in NO way am I trying to disrespect U2 fans or anyone else. I am just giving my opinion.
I hope you are feeling better!
=oD
Not to worry, Crystal. I'm not offended in the least by your response.
I dont't like criticizing people for their taste in music (and I wasn't actually aiming that comment at anyone in particular). I was just reminded of all the great recording artists I never would have discovered if it had been left to the radio dial to introduce me to them. Many of the best songs (even by established pop groups) are buried on the CD's, far below the radar of the radio playlists. So, for instance, if your impression of Coldplay were based on a song like "Yellow", you might be shocked to find that album alone has five or six songs that are probably better (or clearly better, in my opinion).
There are so many great musicians out there that don't even get exposed on the radio. Sometimes, as is the case with my appreciation for Bill Mallonee and V.O.L., all it takes is a good live show from an artist whose CD you wouldn't have thought to purchase.
If my admonishment seemed harsh, please forgive my exuberance in defense of Coldplay. As I previously stated, I'm not their biggest fan, but I do think some of their stuff is unfortunately overlooked.
