Apple Crumb Dessert

Adapted from a recipe in Better Homes and Gardens: New Cookbook .

Easy apple dessert for lazy people with limited skills.

Ingredients for the first part (apple part):
  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (about 5 or 6 apples.)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Preheat oven to 375 F. Sprinkle apples with lemon juice. In a large bowl stir sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add apples and toss until coated. Transfer into a 2 1/2 quart baking dish.

Ingredients for second part (topping):
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed bown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup oats (optional)
Using a pastry blender (I used my food processor and cubed, chilled butter) cut 3 tablespoons of butter into mixture until resembles coarse crumbs. Spoon mixture over apples. Cover edges of baking dish with foil to prevent over browning.

Bake at 375 F for 40 minutes. Remove foil. Bake for 20 minutes until apples tender and filling is bubbly. Cool on a wire rack.

Crispy on top, warm and gooey on the inside, Ross and I love this stuff! We've made it three times this month! Added bonus, it makes your house smell better than any scented candle ever could :P

My friend Jami gave me her super yummy Apple Crisp recipe (pretty much the same as yours) and it's my very most favorite dessert! I LOVE Apple Crisp!!

I think I'll make some after our next shopping trip! I'm out of apples. My kids are apple-alcoholics.

Oh and you are so right, it is the best smell in the world. Jami also told me to cook the apple peal in a little water (I think) with some cinnamon over the stove keep the smell going.

Hey since you're enjoying cooking so much I wanted to share with you one of my favorite recipes!

This is Scott's Grandmother's recipe, it's soooooo good and we often eat it at Christmas.

French Spaghetti

1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
brown and drain

add 2 8oz cans of tomato sauce

cook 1 7oz spaghetti and drain

In one bowl mix...

1 8oz pack of cream cheese
1/3 cup of sour cream
1/2 lbs. small curd cottage cheese
1/4 cup chopped green peppers
1/2 onion chopped

layer in 2 qt. casserole dish

spaghetti
cream mixture
meat sauce

then repeat ending with spaghetti on top

(it won't seem like enough spaghetti, but it is)

put another can of spaghetti sauce on top
put in the fridge overnight

the next day...

pre-heat oven at 300
cook for 1 1/2 hours (longer if you double the recipe) uncovered for the first 15 mins and the last 20 mins.

It's really quick and easy to make and it's a great dish to make for someone and just bring over for them to bake.

It's also good to make the night before a party or for company so there isn't any cooking to do on party/company day!!

Love,
Crystal *
